Have I Mentioned How Much I HATE Microsoft Vista?
No? Well, there, I have now.
Vista absolutely SUCKS. I have been using it on a laptop for a few months now and I can’t find a single redeeming feature about it.
I seriously considered loading XP on this laptop, but wait, no audio drivers.
Okay, how about linux? No audio drivers.
Solaris? No audio drivers.
Now, to be fair, the audio drivers are not a Microsoft problem, but sucky Vista is.
I find myself looking at MacBooks more and more now. I haven’t bought one, yet. But, I know it is just a matter of time.
There are only two software applications keeping me tied to Windows in any way. Eventually, they will both be rewritten and they will not be Windows specific when it happens.
Oh, yeah, did I mention how much I really hate Vista?

I’m surprised you bought one with Vista!
I bought a new laptop a few months back. I knew Vista sucked hence I made sure to get one with XP.
Curious—why did you buy with Vista?
Tim,
I wa a little skiddish about going to mac as well. My wife now has one at home and after seeing bootcamp in action, you can load XP on the Mac and it is seemlessly running on the same desktop as the mac. The start menu is just laying there on the mac desktop and the M$ app you run loads right up. I think about the only issue you might have is if you use specialized hardware that only works on a PC. If your only holdup is software…Get the MacBookPro, however, you might want to wait til after the keynote in June just incase they decide to revamp the 2.5 yr old MacBook hardware design.
Yeah, Debbie, call me stupid. Actually, I thought this was going to be a short term usage and then used for testing.
Mike, I am very close to making the jump. I think I will wait till the keynote next month, just in case…
My daughter just purchased her first computer and she decided to go with the Macbook. My wife is in the market for one as well and she really wants a Macbook. I know that I can run the windows programs using boot camp or other programs but I keep asking myself if many of my programs that I have come to rely on require a windows operating system, then why am I paying the overhead to get a macbook only to run windows? If it wasn’t for that nagging question, I would switch in a heartbeat.
Burke, I know EXACTLY what you are saying. Earlier today, I got a call from a friend after reading this entry earlier. He talked me into buying a MacBook that is not the bleeding edge variety and just underwent a price reduction.
So, here I am replying to this on my new MacBook Pro. I bought the parallel software to run Windows because there are a couple of programs I must use that have not been rewritten to JAVA … YET.
But, so far, these are the ONLY reason I need Windows. I haven’t loaded the parallel software or the XP Pro CD yet and I am almost convinced if I don’t there will be more pressure to get RIPP and FastDraft rewritten.
I don’t know, I am going to sleep on it.
But, so far, I am VERY impressed. The stuff just works. Almost everything is very intuitive. The only two complaints I have are I am used to being able to tap on the glide pad as a left mouse click and this doesn’t support that. The other is there is no right mouse button. But, I will get used to both of those and OpenOffice absolutely screams on here. It is much better than on windows.
Cool! Before I buy another laptop in the near future, I’ll check in with you for review.
In the meantime, I think I have a pair of earplugs somewhere while you work on OpenOffice……
Tim,
Just get a 2 button mouse. To right click on the mouse pad, press the apple key then click.
@Debbie:
I so wish I had made this change long ago.
I am used to a few days being needed to get everything in the windows environment right so it works and I become productive. This just works. Installing software is a breeze and so far I have nothing to really complain about.
I installed the OpenOffice 3 beta for Mac. It just works! I find myself saying that a lot.
It is speedy and responsive and everything, every detail is well thought out.
And, to top it all off the magnetic power plug is WAAAY cool and not just because I have a EE degree.
@mike_mn:
Yes, and that works really well.
I plugged it into my USB KVM switch and, here it is again, it just worked. No complaints, no looking for drivers. It immediately recognized the Microsoft USB mouse and keyboard.
As I said earlier, I should have made this change long ago.
We are in the midst of selecting new hardware for buyers and property managers. I told them to put it all on hold for a few days. I am that impressed and I don’t impress easily.
Cool Trackpad settings! The settings allow it to be set for taps too. A tap with one finger, single or double, is the left mouse button. But, using two fingers, is the right (alternate click) button.
TOO COOL!
BTW, I still have not loaded the XP stuff on here. I did load the Microsoft remote desktop stuff and as long as I can connect to a MS machine I may never load XP here. I can easily make my old laptop available via RDC over a VPN connection for any windows related stuff.
